Upcountry Tamils have registered their protests with the government for its failure to ensure their basic rights.

With a history spanning nearly 200 years, these people have not been provided with any facilities by successive governments, said Rev. Fr. Marimuttu Sathivel, the head of an organization that fights for their rights.

Gathering at Maliappu Junction in Hatton at the weekend, many hundreds of upcountry Tamils displayed placards and shouted slogans in an agitation against the present government.

Fr. Sathivel said they have been denied land, language, cultural and many other rights despite having made considerable contributions to the economy and development.

Without proper leadership, upcountry Tamils get deceived by every government, he added.
