A campaign of protests is underway to pressurize the government to pay attention to the plight of schoolchildren affected by worsening economic woes.
Freedom for Women, an affiliate of the Frontline Socialist Party, is spearheading the drive to ensure that children are provided nutritious meals and school equipment.
Its leader Hemamali Abeyratne said children and women were affected worst by the escalating economic crisis and the numerous taxes imposed by the incumbent regime made matters worse for them.
The organization held yet another protest in front of Lalith Athulathmudali Vidyalaya in Mount Lavinia recently.
“Children’s day celebrations are meaningless. A tomorrow, a country, a future should be saved for children,” Abeyratne said.
