The National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations has a new director-general in Sanjeewa Wimalagunarathna.

A civil society activist, he previously served as a director at the Secretariat for Coordinating Reconciliation Mechanisms.

Counting nearly 20 years of experience in the private and NGO sectors, Wimalagunarathna is also a former consultant at the International Organization for Migration.

He is a graduate in commerce and social sciences from the University of Kelaniya.

The appointment comes after several civil society activists called on the government to appoint him to the position.

His posting to the NGO Secretariat has been welcomed by the National Movement for Social Justice and other civil society groups which have extended their good wishes and support to him.
