The present regime is systematically curtailing the educational rights as a cost-cutting measure, alleges secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin.

Already, the GCE ordinary and advanced level dropouts are denied opportunities for vocational education free of charge, he told the media in Colombo.

The Education Ministry has decided to charge for the training given at vocational training institutions, Stalin said, showing newspaper advertisements detailing the fees.

Especially children from low-income families turn to vocational education, but this move is denying them the opportunity now, said the CTU secretary.

He went on to say the cabinet ministry for tertiary education relegated to a state ministry during the previous government is today a mere division in the Education Ministry.

Stalin questioned as to what the authorities expected from this, and demanded an immediate halt to the selling of vocational education.
