A parallel hunger strike took place in Batticaloa yesterday (16) in a show of support of the 13 fasting Tamil prisoners at Magazine Prison in Colombo.
Both are demanding freedom for Tamil prisoners being held under the PTA and the repealing of the act itself.
The token event in front of Gandhi Park in Batticaloa was attended by religious and Tamil political leaders.
MP Rasamanickam Shanakiyan said the government was not paying attention to the plight of these prisoners even despite the ongoing UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva.
Eleven Tamil prisoners are refusing food for the 11th day at Magazine Prison.
