The Supreme Court today (28) named former president Gotabaya Rajapkasa a respondent in fundamental rights petitions that seek an order for an investigation against the persons responsible for making the country and its people bankrupt.
A SC panel comprising chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda and L.T.B. Dehideniya issued notice on Rajapaksa to appear before the court and make his case on August 01.
The court’s registrar was ordered to send notice to the last known address of the ex-president.
Yesterday, the SC decided to exclude incumbent president Ranil Wickremesinghe from the two FR petitions after considering a motion filed by him against his inclusion.
The petitioners are an ex-president of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Chandra Jayaratne, former star swimmer Julian Bolling, Jehan Kanagaratne and Transparency International – Sri Lanka.
On the same day, the SC extended a foreign travel ban imposed against former finance ministers Mahinda Rajapaksa and Basil Rajapaksa.
Also, a promise by former finance secretary S.R. Attygalle and ex-Central Bank governor W.D. Lakshman that they would not leave the country has been extended until August 02.
