The government’s Policy Statement which was delivered by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa while inaugurating the Second Session of the 9th Parliament yesterday (18) came under heavy criticism from the Tamil National Alliance.

Commenting on the President's statement, TNA spokesperson M.A. Sumanthiran pointed out that it had failed to address any of the pressing issues facing the country, adding that it had also not contained any meaningful statement pertaining to resolving the national issue.

"The policy statement fails to address the national issue. The government seeks the support of Tamil political parties in the North and East to overcome the current issues but it fails to address the current reality," the TNA parliamentarian charged.

"The people of the North and East had voted for the TNA based on the policies that were presented to them. How can we abandon these policies and the aspirations of the people in the two provinces? This can't be done," he added.
