Chairman of the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) Dr Prasanna Gunasena and Managing Director Lalith Jayakody have resigned from their posts, government sources said.

As reported by 'Mawbima', the sudden resignations of both the Chairman and the Managing Director have caused concerns especially when the SPC has successfully facilitated the importation of vaccines needed for Sri Lanka's inoculation drive.

According to media reports, the sudden resignation is a result of a dispute between the SPC chairman and the Health Minister.

Health Ministry sources revealed that these top officials had been summoned and criticized by the Health Minister on several occasions in the last few weeks.

However, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has refuted news reports of Dr. Prasanna Gunasena submitting his resignation.

Dr. Prasanna Gunasena had disconnected his phone yesterday and had reportedly told his closest friends, "I am not allowed to do any work so there is no point in staying back."

The 'medicine mafia' that controls the importation of pharmaceuticals into the country had also launched a media campaign against Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Lalith Jayakody.
