A reshuffle of Provincial Governors is likely to happen in the near future, informed government sources said.

Pro-government news website 'lankacnews' had also reported that high-level discussions have taken place regarding a possible reshuffle of Provincial Governors.

Southern Province Governor Willie Gamage who is a close associate of Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa is slated be appointed as the Governor of the North Western Province.

Meanwhile, former parliamentarian Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, another confidante of the Finance Minister who unsuccessfully contested the last general election from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, is slated to be appointed as the Governor of the Southern Province.

Despite President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's policy to abstain from appointing defeated candidates to high posts, it is learnt that the Rajapaksa family has decided to appoint seasoned politicians as Governors with a view to conducting the upcoming provincial council elections.
