During the last two weeks, 43 students at 28 schools in the Galle District have been diagnosed with Covid-19, Galle District Regional Epidemiologist Venura K. Singarachchi said.

He said that 143 first tier contacts have also been quarantined. Accordingly, 41 school children and 102 teachers have been quarantined.

The highest number of students who had tested positive for Covid-19 was reported from the Rathgama MOH Division. 16 students were reported to have contracted the Coronavirus.

In addition, four students and three teachers from the Galle Municipal Council MOH Division, five students from the Udugama MOH Division, two students each from the Ambalangoda and Baddegama MOH Divisions have tested positive for Covid-19, he said.

Three students from the Balapitiya MOH Division and two students each from the Bope Poddala and Imaduwa MOH Divisions had also tested positive, he added.

 

National newspaper hit with Covid !

14 journalists attached to a national newspaper including its editor-in-chief have also tested positive for Covid-19, it is learnt.

PCR tests carried out on Monday had detected two persons with Covid-19. The rest had been detected from PCR tests carried out on Wednesday (28).

Meanwhile, it is also reported that 5 workers at the Alpha factory in Maththegoda have also tested positive for Covid-19.

 

UK Covid-19 variant confirmed in Sri Lanka

The current COVID-19 variant spreading in Sri Lanka is confirmed to be a variant detected from the UK, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura said.

Addressing a press briefing today (28), he said that the B.1.1.7 variant of the coronavirus which is spreading in the UK is 100% confirmed to be spreading in the country.

He added that this was confirmed from tests conducted on samples obtained from Colombo, Kurunegala, and Boralesgamuwa.
